Over 500 people joined Paralympic athletes and volunteers from 20 Paralympic summer and winter sports at Sports Fest Manchester in May 2014 to try out different sports, find out how to get involved and to ‘meet the medallists’ including ParalympicsGB’s most successful summer Paralympian, Dame Sarah Storey and first-ever ParalympicsGB winter gold medallist Kelly Gallagher.
Sports Fest Manchester was the fourth in the series of free, multi-sport events from the British Paralympic Association (BPA) which have been attended by almost 2,500 people since the first Sport Fest in December 2012. Designed to build on the spirit of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, there was certainly
lots of noise, enthusiasm and inspiration in Manchester!
School groups were well represented. Aamina and Amirah both attend Kingsway Park High School in Rochdale and were trying their hand at canoeing for the first time. “It’s hard,” said Amirah, “but I now want to try it on the water.” Aamina was too exhausted to comment!
Pupils from St Pauls CE Primary School in Withington, Manchester were trying their hand at table tennis. Looking incredibly smart in their red and black kit, the 7 and 8 year-olds had a real appetite and enthusiasm for the sport, and showed great technique and a high level of skill.
