Historic power stations are being decommissioned, current power stations are a critical part of the energy mix and a new wave of plants has been given the go ahead. In the defence sector, the building of reactors for nuclear powered submarines provides unique challenges. Nuclear is back on the agenda and the need for suitably skilled graduates from the UK is greater than ever.

Young engineers and scientists play a crucial role in our industry. You will have the chance to make progress with vital decommissioning work at Sellafield, shape industrial strategy with the NDA or research new commercial reactor designs with Rolls-Royce.  Needless to say you will get a wealth of technical experience and the opportunity to try out more commercial opportunities.

The programme is sponsored by organisations including Rolls-Royce, Sellafield Ltd, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, International Nuclear Services, Office for Nuclear Regulation, Jacobs and Low Level Waste Repository Ltd, some of the most innovative and well respected organisations in the nuclear industry. Upon accepting on offer of a place on the nucleargraduates programme you will be matched with one of our sponsors.

This two year programme consists of three secondments; you can expect to find yourself working with Government, on-site, with the private sector supply chain and regulatory authorities.  There is also the possibility of an international secondment.

Your programme will be broken down into technical and behavioural training. It will be structured against the needs of the institute with whom you’re aiming to gain chartered status. You will come together with your fellow graduates to complete ‘core’ training as well as having the benefit of an individual training budget for training specific to your personal development.

20120522_dounreayIn addition you will spend 10% of your time with us on Footprints, our corporate social responsibility programme. You will have the opportunity to become a STEM ambassador, passing on your knowledge and enthusiasm to the next generation of scientists and engineers. You will establish a start-up company, developing your commercial awareness and increasing your appreciation of the challenges faced by a small business.  You will work with local community projects, meeting inspirational individuals.
