DISABLED sports and activity opportunities will be showcased at a free event in Loughborough.Adults with a disability are invited to join Charnwood Borough Council for a sporting open morning, showcasing a range of disabled sports and activities to increase confidence, fitness and have fun.
The Disability Open morning, run in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, will be at Loughborough Leisure Centre on Monday, September 16 from 10.30am to 12pm.
Chris Traill, Charnwood Borough Council’s Strategic Director of Neighbourhoods and Community Wellbeing, said: “The Council is committed to ensuring residents have access to facilities that could help them to lead healthy and active lives.
“The activities we will be showcasing during the open morning include new age curling, short tennis and cricket, all designed to suit a range of abilities.
“The event also forms as an introduction to the weekly regular sessions that we hold for anyone with a disability looking to get involved in sport.”
Alongside the open morning, the Council’s Sport and Active Recreation team runs a regular programme physical activity for people with disabilities at Loughborough Leisure Centre.
From 11am to 12pm on Monday and Wednesday, for only £1, the team hosts a session open to all, from those with learning disabilities to sight impairments and physical disabilities.
A carer added: “On Wednesdays this individual communicates really well and appears to make choices easier than on other days, she engages on a social level with her peers and is happier. The sensory aspects of the session are also a huge part of their enjoyment.”
