JS40951803Wirral Mencap’s newly appointed trustee Angela Hesketh has got off to a flying start in her involvement with the charity as she and five others participated in a 10,000ft sponsored skydive on Saturday, June 21.

Angela’s efforts alone helped raise almost £500, with the other participants’ fundraising totals yet to be added.

The skydive marked the end of Learning Disability Week 2014, an annual national campaign led by Mencap UK that promotes better understanding of learning disability. Wirral Mencap is an independent charity that supports equal opportunities for people with a learning disability and so the timing of the skydive was fitting with the significance of that week.

Angela, a legal executive and friend of the charity, was appointed a trustee at Wirral Mencap during the AGM in November 2013.

Wirral Mencap approached Angela to see if she could help share news of the vacancy with her contacts, but it came as a pleasant surprise when she responded by expressing her own interest in the role.

Commented Angela: “Since I joined the board I’ve been keen to proactively involve myself in raising both funds and awareness of Wirral Mencap. This is the charity’s 50th year supporting local people with a learning disability and it has faced many challenges in that time, including lack of funding and recognition.

“When the team announced that they were looking for people to participate in a sponsored skydive I knew that this was the perfect opportunity for me to take the lead. My family came along as moral support on the day and there was a real feeling of camaraderie between myself and the others.

“The jump itself was fantastic. What a rush, a truly exhilarating experience – the freefall was over in what seemed like milliseconds and then we made our way down in a strange type of quiet towards the ground.  It was the most amazing experience and I’m grateful to everyone for sponsoring us all – raising vital funds for a worthy local cause.”
