Family Fund is the UK’s largest charity providing grants to families raising disabled or seriously ill children and young people. Last year, they provided 88,119 grants and services worth over £33 million to families across the UK.

They aim to give all families raising disabled and seriously ill children and young people the same opportunities as others by providing grants for essential items such as washing machines, sensory toys, family breaks, bedding, clothing and computers. It can be a struggle financially, emotionally and physically for these families, Family Fund grants help to ease some of the additional pressures that families face.

Two year old Erin has CHARGE syndrome, a rare genetic condition which affects her respiratory system. She loves the park and playing with her sister.

Her mum said: “She’s like any other little girl really, but she has a lot of complex needs on top of that. Erin is tube fed, and was previously fed formula, which gave her the right nutrients but caused a lot of bowel issues. We tried a blended diet with Erin and almost instantly the issues cleared up and she was much happier.”

“However the blender we had wouldn’t always blend smooth enough and our dietician worried that food may get stuck in Erin’s tube. We decided to apply to Family Fund for a Vitamix blender, which apparently ‘can blend a brick’! I was a bit nervous about applying at first, but it was totally fine, the process was very straightforward.”

“The blender has a two litre jug which means I can cook and blend Erin’s food in batches and freeze it which saves me loads of time and means I get to spend more time with Erin and her sister. It’s a fab bit of kit, I absolutely love it – it seems a bit sad to get excited over something like a blender but it has really made a world of difference to us! We couldn’t have afforded the Vitamix ourselves as they’re really expensive so we’re so grateful to Family Fund for the support.”

Family Fund’s support is not only financial, their sleep hub, Tired Out, brings together tips and resources to help families get a good night’s rest, while their Digital Skills workshops allow parents to learn about apps, accessibility features, and get the most out of their tablet.
