Santander Consumer Finance handed over the keys to two renovated bungalows, for students with complex needs, at Young Epilepsy on Friday 10 June.
The Big Build is a Corporate Social Responsibility project set up by Santander Consumer Finance staff to give something back to the local community in a way that would provide lasting support and benefits. Every year the team have worked with a charity and this year they chose Young Epilepsy. Together with Splash Community Projects, they renovated two purpose built bungalows for students at Young Epilepsy to help transition them into independent living.
A total of 305 people donated 2440 hours of their time to produce this new facility to enable the charity to offer a full transitional service to support more young people, something that is brand new to the Young Epilepsy campus. Young people with epilepsy and other associated conditions deserve the best possible opportunities and support through life, these bungalows will help provide that. Previous Big Builds include a boat-style outdoor classroom and canoe deck, low ropes and sensory woodland activity area and a bespoke decking area complete with bandstand and BBQ, which are all situated around the Young Epilepsy campus.
Carol Long, Chief Executive at Young Epilepsy, said:
“We have enjoyed an amazing partnership with Santander Consumer Finance for the past five years. They have provided for us incredible facilities during that time, which have been transformational for our campus and for our students. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Big Build team who has volunteered so generously of their time to renovate what were very outdated bungalows. We cannot thank them enough. These bungalows will provide wonderful accommodation that will support our students in learning the skills that will bring them one step closer to living independent lives.”
Vik Hill, Managing Director of Santander Consumer Finance, said:
“It has always been a pleasure to work with Young Epilepsy, and with Splash Projects. We have worked together on a number of projects over the years, creating facilities to enhance the life of students, but this year I think we have created something that’s truly life-changing for them.
“I’m also motivated by what our staff gain from the experience too. They are placed in an unfamiliar environment, with a seemingly impossible task, and need to respond with the right attitude and behaviours to produce the right outcome for Young Epilepsy. The skills that we learn and practice are directly applicable in our workplace, so that we can apply the right attitude in all we do to deliver the right outcome for our Customers, Dealer Partners and ultimately our Shareholder.”
Simon Poole, Managing Director of Splash Projects, said;
“This is our fifth project with Santander Consumer Finance and Young Epilepsy and the most ambitious yet. The benefits are two-fold; as well as creating a much-needed new facility the Big Build also challenges Santander’s management team, stretching and developing their skills for the future. We are very proud to be involved with this programme.”
