Vice President of national disabled people’s charity and former carer tells moving story of Revitalise guests.

TV personality, writer and comedian Arthur Smith is to present a BBC Radio 4 fundraising appeal on behalf of national disabled people’s charity Revitalise on Sunday 13 August.

Arthur, a long-time Vice-President of the charity and a former carer himself, will tell the moving story of Mavis and Colin Akrill, who recently benefitted from a respite break with the charity.

The appeal will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 13 August at 7.55am and 9.26pm, then repeated on Thursday 17 August at 3.27pm.

All the funds raised by the Appeal will go towards the Revitalise Support Fund (RSF), which was established to help disabled people and carers in financial hardship take much-needed respite breaks with the charity.

In the Appeal, Arthur talks about his own experience as a carer for his mother Hazel, then goes on tell the story of Mavis and Colin. When Mavis developed MS, Colin gave up work to care for her, but was himself diagnosed with dementia in 2002 and Mavis became his carer.

Arthur tells the story of the daily challenges Mavis and Colin face and how their recent break with Revitalise helped sustain their relationship.

Revitalise CEO Chris Simmonds commented:

“We felt very privileged to be selected by the BBC for this special appeal.  Arthur was the obvious choice for us. He has done a huge amount for Revitalise over the years and I would like to thank him so much for doing such an excellent job.

“Arthur’s empathy for Mavis and Colin’s situation really shines through, since he himself has been carer, for his mum, and has personal experience of the strain this can sometimes put people under.

“I really hope that people will tune in and donate to our appeal. It will help us support many more disabled people in hardship to take vital respite breaks with us – people just like Mavis and Colin.”
