PrintMuscular Dystrophy UK responds to news that Beyoncé has chosen model, Jillian Mercardo, who has muscular dystrophy, to be the face of her online store.

Sal Lalji, Communications Director for Muscular Dystrophy UK, said:

“It is fantastic to see a model with muscular dystrophy fronting such a high-profile campaign. We commend Beyoncé for recognising Jillian for the talented model that she is.

“One in six working-age adults is disabled, yet there is a noticeable lack of high profile disabled models, actors, TV personalities and musicians. Young disabled people tell us how this lack of presence can have a significant impact on their self-acceptance and confidence. This is why it is so important that other brands, both in the UK and beyond, take Beyoncé’s lead, and work towards being more fully inclusive.

“Media representation is an issue that we take very seriously, which is why have launched a campaign working with young disabled people, to see what can be done. We are calling on brands in the UK to lend their support to the campaign.”
