Local man, Gareth Powell, has run his first ever marathon, half a world away in Disney World, Florida and raised over £1,150 for Stick ‘n’ Step – a charity much closer to home.
Having never run 26 miles before and with only a few months training, Gareth, 36, completed the race in under five hours. He finished it in 4 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, which was a wonderful personal achievement, and he raised £1,159 for north west charity Stick ‘n’ Step.
“The daughter of a colleague of mine attends classes at Stick ‘n’ Step so the charity was the obvious choice once I had decided to take part in the event. Running round five Disney parks with over 17,000 entrants was an extraordinary sensation and the atmosphere was wonderful with loads of people cheering me on. I’m very glad I did it but I think I’ll stick to 10k runs in future – if I want to be competitive anyway!”
Hettie Miles, Corporate and Community Fundraiser, Stick ‘n’ Step, said:
“We would like to send huge congratulations to Gareth for his amazing achievement. The money he raised will do so much to help the children who come to Stick ‘n’ Step and we are very grateful for his kind donation.”
