1 SDGP HOMEPAGE ROXBURGHE 1Disabled golfers from across Great Britain will descend on The Roxburghe Golf Resort & Hotel next week to compete over three days in a brand new Ryder Cup event for the disabled.

Generated by the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership (SDGP), the GB Phoenix Cup will see ten of the best disabled golfers from the SDGP take on the prestigious golf course in the Scottish Borders in match play team events including foursomes and fourball competitions.  The opposition to the SDGP has been created by the newly formed British Inclusive Golf charity (BIG), which is bringing players from across England and Wales.

Kevin Booth, the Chair of BIG said, “This is a great opportunity to promote pan-disability golf across the whole country and I am so excited about having this chance to head up, what looks to be a very strong group of disabled golfers. We have representatives from all disabled groups on our squad, with guys and girls having varying sensory, intellectual and physical disabilities, coming together to enjoy what I am sure will be a great week’s golf.”

The event is part of the SDGP’s 10th Anniversary Celebrations and is the third Ryder Cup style event to be generated by the charity.  The other two are being staged in London and Nevada USA later in the year.  The SDGP was the first group in the world to fully incorporate anyone of any age with a disability and now has over 900 disabled members and coaches.

1 SDGP HOMEPAGE ROXBURGHE 2Jim Gales, the SDGP Captain for the GB Phoenix Cup said, “The Roxburghe Hotel will be excellent hosts for this event and we have managed to bring on board some excellent support and sponsorships, from the likes of the Scottish Borders Council, Golfer Mag, who are sponsoring the brand new event trophy, and several Scottish and English based Trusts and Foundations. This will be a chance to prove to everyone that having any kind of disability is never a barrier to playing golf.”

The first round of the competition will be played on Monday 23 June at 14:00, and the SDGP will provide golf lessons and practice through staging one of their ‘First Swing Clinics’ from 10:00.  The final round begins on Wednesday 25 June at 10:00 and the GB Phoenix Cup will be presented by Laila Monaghan of Golfer Mag.
